I have been teaching for 16 years. I was Classicly trained & have embraced many other continuing education intructors with a variety of backgrounds that have given me a well-rounded process of training to support my clients. A pilates regimen is ideal for all ages of Bozeman residents who wish to maintain fitness, strength and flexibility in supporting their individual activities.
I absolutely love how Brooke Siler, author of The Pilates Body, shares what this movement art is all about and its key principles to understand:
‘Pilates is an exercise program that coordinates mind and body to support each other on the path to overall fitness: “sane mind in a sound body” is it’s goal. Pilates is a unique combination of stretching and strengthening. Each exercise has been carefully thought through, as has each detail of each exercise. As a result, a Pilates workout will not leave you tired and sore, but you can be sure that it will condition and strengthen every part of your body. As you learn the system, you will be amazed at the quality of results you can achieve.’
Certain key principles are crucial to the effectiveness of a Pilates workout. If you remember them and practice them diligently, you will progress quickly.
I order to make the crucial mind-body connection, Pilates requires you to pay close attention to each movement you perform and how your muscles respond. So stay focused! Concentration is the most important part of any Pilates exercise. Without it you can neither progress nor achieve the benefits of this unique system.
Pilates requires elegant, precise muscle control. If you let your movements become sloppy, you will lose the benefits of the exercise. Together, concentration and control help you avoid injury and produce the best possible results.
Most of us think of our arms and legs as our primary tools for mobility. Pilates asks you to shift your focus from your limbs to your center or “powerhouse.” The powerhouse which includes the abdominals, low back, hips and buttocks is the source of energy for your whole body. Pilates teaches you to inhabit the center of your body, engaging your abdominals, low back, hips and buttocks and thus creating stability and fighting gravity. Because all the major organs of the body are housed in your center, learning correct positioning can favorably affect internal well-being.
Pilates is as graceful as it is economical. One movement flows into another. No movement is isolated or static. A PIlates workout should feel as smooth as dancing or swimming. Smooth transitions from movement to movement are keys to efficiency and grace
In Pilates, every single movement has a purpose. Thus, you will want to learn each exercise precisely. You can’t be said to have mastered an exercise without having mastered every one of it’s details! However, don’t worry about learning it all perfectly right away and don’t overthink every tiny detail as you go. While you don’t need a lifetime to see results, Pilates is a lifelong study. Eventually, getting each detail right will be second nature
The fundamental purpose of Pilates is to increase circulation and oxygen flow to the brain and the rest of the body. By forcing toxins out of your system through deep exhalations and refilling the body with pure air through full inhalations, you maintain and reserve energy to get through the trials of daily life. To reach this goal most efficiently, you must learn to breathe correctly. Thus, each exercise is coordinated with the breath to help you get the most from the movement.
Your most important fitness ally is your mind. The more creative you are in your workouts, the more connected your mind and body become.
If a movement doesn’t feel comfortable or natural, don’t do it! Pilates should never hurt and you should never work through pain. Always trust your sense of what feels right to you and what doesn’t. Of course, there’s a difference between the satisfying feeling of exertion you get when you work hard and the pain that comes from strain or overexertion. Learn to recognize the difference and work within your limits.
Pilates isn’t just a way to attain a long, lean body: It’s a tool for living. What we learn on the mat has impact off the mat, enabling us to move through everyday experiences with more grace, balance and ease. Pilates can and should be used in conjunction with other sports without altering its fundamental principles. It shows you how to care for your body by teaching economy of movement, correct breathing, proper posture and alignment.
